Harris County Monthly Tax Sale a Success

Mike Sullivan recovers lost revenue for taxpayers

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Mike Sullivan is working to reclaim lost revenues for Harris County residents. Thousands of properties sit vacant throughout the county, creating unsafe conditions and lowering property values. Many property owners are delinquent, and for months they fail to meet their tax obligations.

With help from our legal partners, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, we were able to make drastic improvements to an eyesore property in Harris County.

On February 3, 2015, the property at 2104 Hutchinson was sold for $268,000.00 in back taxes and city liens. This house was originally built for the YWCA as a residence in 1930 and fell into disrepair in the 1990’s. In the last decade this property has housed vagrants and been ravaged by fire. Although redevelopment had come to the area just south of the US-59 and I-45 intersection, this home’s unmarketable title and large tax and city delinquency made the redevelopment of this specific property near impossible. The new owner, now with a cleared title from the tax sale, has begun making plans to redevelop the property.

“Delinquent property taxes unfairly burden the taxpayers of Harris County, and we need to recover every dollar possible,” said Mr. Sullivan. “It is success stories, like these, that will help strengthen Harris County and provide the greatest benefit to our community and residents.”

Each month the county holds public auctions. The goal is to put neglected properties into the hands of new owners.

For the month of February 2015, a total of 317 properties were posted for sale. Sullivan successfully reclaimed $2,561,685.39 for the citizens of Harris County.
