May 31 Deadline to Protest Property Appraisal

Mike Sullivan urges flooded families to lower tax burden

Tax Assessor-Collector Mike Sullivan is reminding property owners that tomorrow is the last day to protest property tax appraisals.

"I know the flooding has affected many home and business owners. I know they are dealing with chaos in their lives but they must pay attention to this important deadline," said Mike Sullivan.

Sullivan has called for a reappraisal of flooded properties. Harris County Commissioners are currently weighing all options.

"However, if the reappraisal is not done, it's more important than ever that property owners file a protest," said Sullivan.

Exemptions are the easiest way property owners can lower their tax burden. When you receive your notice, verify if you are receiving the proper exemptions.

Most common exemptions:

Texas law allows property owners to protest their value if they believe it is too high. “You can apply online through HCAD (www.hcad.org) or fill out and send the form included in your appraisal notice,” said Sullivan. “Be sure to provide as much information as possible on the protest form, whether it’s about similar properties in your neighborhood or changes made on your property or land. All of this will aid in your protest and may lower the value, which will lower your property tax bill at the end of the year.”
